Getting a Grip on Arthritis

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
Brett Loding Said:

Arthritis – and the way it can affect your health and quality of life – can be a difficult thing to come to grips with. Arthritis isn’t so much a specific disease as it is a condition that can arise as a result of over 100 different illnesses. Generally, arthritis involves degeneration or inflammation of the joints. However, it can also include swelling, deformity, and – eventually – disability. Some forms of arthritis can even damage seemingly unlikely organs like the heart, eyes, urinary tract, and skin.

Arthritis affects over 46 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also estimates that more than one-fifth of our adult population has some form of arthritic condition. Again, arthritis can come in many different forms, and – although they are all related – its not always easy to recognize arthritis in all of its different guises. The diseases gout and pseudogout are forms of arthritis in which crystals form in the joints.

Psoriatic arthritis is a condition that only affects those who already have the skin disease psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis that is focused specifically in the spine. Despite its more exotic incarnations, most Americans with arthritis suffer from one of two types: rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and osteoarthritis (OA).

Rheumatiod arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own defenses are turned against healthy tissues. RA can be a debilitating disease, characterized by a painful swelling of the joints that can be quite severe. Arthritis can impact the lives of people of all ages, and the most common form of arthritis in children is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis is so common that many of the aches and pains we simply accept as “part of getting older,” are symptoms of osteoarthritis. The bad knees and hips many of us have experienced are – generally – the result of the degeneration of cartilage on these load-bearing joints, caused by osteoarthritis. What options do we have when faced with such a variable, widespread condition?

First, it is important to determine whether or not you are in fact suffering from one of the many forms of arthritis. The diagnosis of the condition can involve a physical exam, evaluation of medical history, x-ray tests, ultrasound, and perhaps even blood and urine tests. Once it is determined that you actually do have one of the forms of arthritis , it is important to understand that there is no cure for the disease. However, there are a number of treatment options that can help you minimize the disease’s painful symptoms, and maximize your quality of life.

Treatment of arthritis can take on a variety of forms in order to address the three key issues for any patient with the disease: alleviating pain, preventing degeneration, and maintaining and improving joint mobility. Treatment can include: exercise, physical therapy, occupational therapy and medications. In the most severe of cases, surgery may be required in order to remove growths, or replace an entire joint. The replacement of an entire joint in known as arthroplasty. Arthroplasty of knee joints has become a very common and effective procedure for patients with severe degeneration of cartilage in their joints. In addition to these various forms of treatments, there are now a number of lifestyle products that are custom-designed for people of all ages who’s lives have been affected by arthritis.

One of the most difficult aspects of dealing with arthritis is that it can make simple tasks you have always taken for granted painful and difficult. We rarely worry about opening a jar or a door, but arthritis can make even these basic tasks challenging. With Great Grips, you can open any door or jar. Just stretch the Grip over the knob or lid, and you suddenly have the leverage and gripping surface you need to make any gripping task a snap. The cordless, ergonomic, automatic Gizmo Can Opener can bring the same kind of ease to your kitchen tasks, insuring that arthritis won’t sideline the home-gourmet in you.

The Evoluent company has even built a better mouse so the computer -savvy arthritis sufferer can stay logged-in without stress or strain.

Consult your doctor. Find out if you are suffering from arthritis, and what you can do about it. With the right treatments – and the right products – arthritis doesn’t have to be such a pain.

Arthritis definitions

Inflammation of a joint. When joints are inflamed they can develop stiffness, warmth, swelling, redness and pain. There are over 100 types of arthritis. (see osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, gout, pseudogout).

A disease characterized by joint inflammation. Joint injury can be caused by trauma or by the wear and tear of aging. The general term arthritis includes over 100 kinds of diseases, most of which last for life. In many forms of arthritis, injury is caused by the uncontrolled inflammation of autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues. Common kinds of arthritis include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis causes

Scientists do not yet fully understand what causes the various forms of arthritis. They are studying risk factors to determine why some people develop the disease and others do not.

The literal meaning of arthritis is “joint inflammation” and it can affect joints in any part of the body. Joints are the places in the body where two bones meet. When you have arthritis, damage is caused to a lesser or greater degree to the joints and mostly occurs in the hands, arms and legs. The inflammation in one or more of the joints results in pain, swelling and limited movement. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in those over the age of 65 and it generally affects people from the age of 60.

Arthritis Symptoms

Osteoarthritis / Osteoarthrosis (OA, also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease, arthrosis or in more colloquial terms “wear and tear”), is a condition in which low-grade inflammation results in pain in the joints, caused by wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints. As the bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, the patient experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Due to decreased movement because of the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax. OA is the most common form of arthritis.

Arthritis treatement

A cornerstone of therapy of any form of arthritis is physical therapy and occupational therapy to maintain joint mobility and range of motion. The proper kind and amount of this therapy will vary depending upon the underlying cause and upon individual factors that your physician will discuss with you

Arthritis remedies

Herbal arthritis remedies have been helping ease arthritis pain and inflamation for centuries. Unlike harsh modern drugs that can shock and weaken our system, medicinal herbs and herbal remedies soothe and strenghten our entire body and are good for arthritis relief ..

1 tbs juice of fresh leaves of bathua, drink every day on an empty stomach for 2-3 months. Do not add anything to the juice and do not eat anything for 2 hours before and after.

Warm mustard oil, spread it over Madar leaf ( Indian ) and foment the joint by spreading the leaf over the joint and keeping it there for a few hours for arthritis relief

On an empty stomach take 3-4 walnuts (akhrot) or 1 fresh coconut.

Arthritis can be hell to live with, but you don’t have to put up with it. There is a range of natural approaches that can help ease the pain.

Anyone who has arthritis knows it can be a nightmare. It causes inflamed, stiff and swollen joints, leading to chronic pain. And, contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be over a certain age to get it. Of the eight million people in the UK with arthritis, a million are under 50, with 27,000 aged 25 or younger.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as in other organs in the body. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system.

Rheumatoid arthritis does not just affect the joints. Tendons are like ropes which run inside lubricated tubes. The lubricating system is very similar to that in the joints themselves, so it is not surprising that tendons can also be affected by rheumatoid arthritis. In a few people, other parts of the body such as the lungs and the blood vessels may become inflamed.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the joints. It is a disabling and painful inflammatory condition, which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles

Acupunture – It is based on the theory that inserting hair-fine needles along certain energy lines can help stimulate energy flow. This can therefore help in reducing pain.

Alexander technique – It involves analyzing whole body patterns, rather then a certain part of the body which contains the symptom. It is designed to help us maneuver in a better way and eliminate tension to give a greater effect during old age.

Anakinra is another biologic treatment that is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. Anakinra works by binding to a cell messenger protein (IL-1, a proinflammation cytokine). Anakinra is injected under the skin daily. Anakinra can be used alone or with other DMARDs. The response rate of anakinra does not seem to be as high as with other biologic medications.

Reflexology has been an ancient technique used by the early Egyptians and Chinese. It involves massage to the feet and the palm of the hand to help improve the state of the rest of the body. When massage will be applied to the feet or palm of the hand, it will generate a warm and comforting sensation. This is an ideal method for stress management and overall health maintenance; factors that cause arthritis.

Alexander technique involves analyzing whole body patterns, rather then a certain part of the body which contains the symptom. It is a way of teaching improved stance to help people stand and move more efficiently. It is designed to help us maneuver in a better way and eliminate tension which is responsible for many ailments in the body which rambles on to give a greater effect during old age.

Chiropractic therapy – It has long been used to give relief from symptoms of arthritis. Homeopathy has its roots in history. Developed in the 18 century, it’s a system of remedies based on the belief that taking tiny amount of natural substances to stimulate body own defenses against arthritis. Osteopathy is a method to treat arthritis which includes the manipulation of the body to restore normal action and decrease pain.

Knowing Some Types Of Arthritis

In the aged and children, pain might not be the main feature; the aged patient simply moves less, the infantile patient refuses to use the affected limb. This gout is known as pseudogout.

Arthropathies Arthritis (Septic arthritis, Reactive arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Felty’s syndrome, Juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Still’s disease) – crystal (Gout, Chondrocalcinosis) – Osteoarthritis (Heberden’s node, Bouchard’s nodes) These might include: rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor (ANF), extractable nuclear antigen, and specific antibodies.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the bodies own immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium (cell lining inside the joint). Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. Contributing factors include congenital hip luxation (which is genetically determined), obesity, osteoporosis, and inflammatory diseases such as Perthes’ sickness and all chronic forms of arthritis (e. Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage which normally protects the joints allowing for smooth movement.

Causes Of Arthritis

Fatigue is a result of the arthritis pain, this can make it harder to handle and a make it seem worse. Overdoing any physical activity or even staying still for to long will cause a reaction within the joints and the tissues and make it much harder to handle the arthritis pain, taking it easy and exercising lightly help to control the pain and keep it to a minimal. Many people tend to believe that if you do not stress over it, keep your mind busy and distracted it would be easier to cope with. Osteoarthritis results from wear and tear from playing certain types of sports, being overweight and getting older.

Cure for Arthritis

Arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) may be required in eroding forms of arthritis. There are several ways to lessen how much pain you have when your arthritis acts up. Treatment options vary depending on the type of arthritis and include physical and occupational therapy, lifestyle changes (including exercise and weight control), and medications (symptomatic or targeted at the sickness process causing the arthritis). Cold or heat therapy benefits some patients, as do relaxation techniques.

But studies also suggest green tea may help prevent or ease symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Commonly referred to as one of nature’s perfect foods, bananas are perhaps best known for packing potassium, but they’re also good sources of arthritis-fighting vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin C. In addition, salmon contains calcium, vitamin D, and folate. If you are in need of vitamin C but aren’t a big fan of citrus fruits, reach for a green pepper.

It may also become red, swollen, and warm to the touch. You can also get more information on arthritis symptoms from the Arthritis Foundation. People living with arthritis normally have various emotions stirred up within them.

 Hip Arthritis

Arthritis information

What is arthritis ?

Arthritis is a general term covering more than 100 different conditions.

The term arthritis literally means inflammation of a joint, but is generally used to describe any condition in which there is damage to the cartilage. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury. The warning signs that inflammation presents are redness, swelling, heat and pain…

What are the different types of arthritis ?

There are over 100 different types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis : -

Osteoarthriti also called degenerative joint disease, this is the most common type of arthritis, which occurs most often in older people. This disease affects cartilage, the tissue that cushions and protects the ends of bones in a joint…

Rheumatoid arthritis : -

This is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system (the body’s way of fighting infection) attacks healthy joints, tissues, and organs. Occurring most often in women of childbearing age (15-44), this disease inflames the lining (or synovium) of joints. It can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of function in joints…

Fibromyalgia : -

This chronic disorder causes pain throughout the tissues that support and move the bones and joints. Pain, stiffness, and localized tender points occur in the muscles and tendons, particularly those of the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. Fatigue and sleep disturbances may also occur….

Gout : -

When a person has gout, they have higher than normal levels of uric acid in the blood. The body makes uric acid from many of the foods we eat. Too much uric acid causes deposits, called uric acid crystals, to form in the fluid and lining of the joints…

Infectious arthritis : -

Arthritis can be caused by an infection, either bacterial or viral, such as Lyme disease. When this disease is caused by bacteria, early treatment with antibiotics can ease symptoms and cure the disease.

Reactive arthritis : -

This is arthritis that develops after a person has an infection in the urinary tract, bowel, or other organs. People who have this disease often have eye problems, skin rashes, and mouth sores.

Psoriatic arthritis : -

Some people who have psoriasis, a common skin problem that causes scaling and rashes, also have arthritis. This disease often affects the joints at the ends of the fingers and can cause changes in the fingernails and toenails. Sometimes the spine can also be affected.

Systemic lupus erythematosus : -

Also called lupus or SLE, this is an autoimmune disease. When a person has an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks itself, killing healthy cells and tissue, rather than doing its job to protect the body from disease and infection…

                                                                                                                               And many more…………….

What causes osteoarthritis ?

Osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing out of the cartilage covering the bone ends in a joint. This may be due to excessive strain over prolonged periods of time, or due to other joint diseases, injury or deformity.

Primary osteoarthritis is commonly associated with ageing and general degeneration of joints. Secondary osteoarthritis is generally the consequence of another disease or condition, such as repeated trauma or surgery to the affected joint, or abnormal joint structures from birth…

Predisposing factors to Osteoarthritis of hip

Some conditions may predispose the hip to osteoarthritis, It tends to affect people as they get older and particularly affects joints that have to take a lot of stresses and strains…

What are the symptoms of arthritis ?

There are more than 100 different forms of arthritis, symptoms vary according to the form of arthritis. Each form affects the body differently….

How can a doctor diagnose arthritis ?

Doctors diagnose arthritis with a medical history, physical exam and x-rays of the hip. There is no blood test for osteoarthritis….

Treatment Options

Initial treatment for osteoarthritis of the hip or knee is conservative, consisting of rest, avoidance of vigorous weight bearing activities, and the use of non-narcotic analgesic and or anti inflammatory medications. With worsening symptoms a cane or a knee brace may be helpful.

Treatment of osteoarthritis focuses on decreasing pain and improving joint movement, and may include : -

Exercises to keep joints flexible and improve muscle strength Many different medications are used to control pain, including corticosteroids and NSAIDs. Glucocorticoids injected into joints that are inflamed and not responsive to NSAIDS. For mild pain without inflammation, acetaminophen may be used. Heat/cold therapy for temporary pain relief Joint protection to prevent strain or stress on painful joints Surgery (sometimes) to relieve chronic pain in damaged joints Weight control to prevent extra stress on weight-bearing joints…

Hip Replacement – Hip Arthritis Treatment

The hip joint is commonly called a “ball and socket” joint. The “ball” of the hip joint, the femoral head, rests within a “socket” called the acetabulum (see figure below). The femoral head and acetabulum are covered by a specialized surface, articular cartilage, which allows smooth and painless motion of the joint. With hip injury or disease, articular cartilage undergoes degeneration and wears away…

Selection of the optimal treatment plan should be consistent with the degree of pain, the amount of hip disability, and the nonsurgical and surgical alternatives. The individual’s anticipated life span will also influence the selection of treatment….

Dr John Anne Said:

Arthritis simply means inflammation of the joints. Arthritis can occur at any age but generally it is seen in people who are over 40 years of age. The inflamed condition of joint can occur due to many reasons caused externally as well internally.

Types of arthritis

Osteo-arthritis – Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the break-down and ultimate loss of the cartilage of one or more joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis – An autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body

Gout – Condition characterized by unusually elevated levels of uric acid in the blood, chronic attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis), deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in and around the joints, and reduced kidney function and kidney stones

Arthritis Treatment for Arthritis Pain Relief

Arthritis as mentioned earlier also is a condition in which inflammation of the joint occurs. In some conditions there occur some anatomical changes that leads to permanent changes in the joint and the reverse of it is impossible. But there are certain methods that are extremely beneficial in attaining a good arthritis pain relief. Herbal massage is one of them.

Historically, herbal massage has been known for its numerous health benefits as early as the second century BC. It was Hippocrates (father of allopathic medicine) in the fifth century who espoused the benefits of rubbing a joint.

Herbal massage therapy cannot cure or stop the sequence of any of these arthritic conditions, but massage can most confidently ease the symptoms associated with inflammation, and help improve the quality of life of someone affected by arthritis.

The Benefits of Herbal Massage in arthritical conditions are:

Herbal massage helps in increasing blood circulation in the particular area.

Herbal massage increases the flexibility and mobility of the affected joint

These massages also decreases pain and inflammation of the joint

Herbal massages relieves the muscle form aches and stiffness

An herbal massage makes a sense of overall relaxation and wellness of the affected joint by arthritis.

How To Identify Arthritis?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
John Goldman Said:

Arthritis is the condition in which the joints in the body get damaged and it eventually results in disability. It generally occurs in people who are aged sixty years or above. Arthritis can be classified into many different forms and each has different characteristics and cause. Most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis that will result in trauma in joints and also infection. A lot of studies have concluded that abnormal anatomy can be one cause for the development of arthritis.

Other forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and also autoimmune diseases. The body will start attacking itself in vase of a person suffering from autoimmune disease. Arthritis can be classified into hundred types and the symptoms of each can vary from the other.

In general there are certain signs that can help in identifying arthritis. The body will show certain signs that can help you identify whether it is arthritis or any other disease. It will help you to get medical help and treat the problem effectively.

Common signs and indications

A person suffering from any form of arthritis will have persistent pain in the joints. This is because all the problems of arthritis will be due to joint problems. A person should find out the region that causes pain as an arthritis patient will have pain in joints of hand, feet and also elbows. If a person is feeling tenderness in his joints then it may be due to arthritis.

A joint that is aggravated due to movement like walking, writing, or getting up will feel some tenderness in the joints. The joints will also start becoming warmer than the normal body temperature. This is created due to the tenderness in the joints. Inflammation of the joints can be a cause of arthritis.

Inflammation that is indicated by the swelling of the joints, redness, and warmth can signify the problem of arthritis. The part of the body with the joints will start swelling and this will limit or eliminate the mobility in the joints completely. A lot of people suffering from arthritis have deformity in the joints. This may lead to the ineffectiveness of that part like fingers and hands. The deformity may increase with the course of time.

Actions

Arthritis patients lose flexibility and also the motion range in the affected joints. This may be temporary or permanent; based on the medical attention given. People will start losing weight and start feeling fatigued and weak. Arthritis patients won’t have any specific diseases and also get crepitus. It is a clinical syndrome where a person will have a grating or crackling feeling around joints or lungs.

A person may also suffer from multiple arthritis diseases where he will have more than one type of arthritis. People who are having any of these symptoms should immediately go for medical treatments. Proper attention to the problem can help in eliminating the problem or controlling it. The diagnostic tests for arthritis include X-ray and blood tests. A person should always look out for the symptoms so that he can give proper medical attention to it. The earlier you find out; the better it is for treatment and cure.

Forms Of Arthritis

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Mercy Maranga Said:

There are over 100 types or forms of arthritis. The most common form is osteoarthritis which normally affects the weight bearing joints. When the weight bearing joints such as the spine, knees, hips and the feet have to support excess weight, they become weak leading to degeneration of the cartilage. The cartilage is normally found between bones and as it degenerates, the bones begin to rub against each other leading to pain, stiffness, inflammation as well as tenderness in the joints. Effective remedies in this case are weight control and exercise which will help to build and retain muscle mass.

Inflammatory forms of this disease refer to conditions of the joints that involve the immune system. It has been noted that many forms of arthritis are autoimmune disorders. Autoimmune disorders normally occur when abnormalities in the immune system make the body to attack its own joints as well as other connective tissues. Examples of autoimmune conditions include rheumatoid, ankylosing spondylitis and lupus.

Rheumatoid is a chronic and systematic disorder that affects the joints leading to inflammatory synovistis. It can also lead to the degeneration of articular cartilage. Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic condition  that commonly affects joints in the spine and the sacroilium in the pelvis. It can also affect other joints such as the knees, hips, shoulders and the feet.

Lupus is another autoimmune disease that is characterized by acute and chronic inflammation of body tissues. This disorder can lead to diseases of the joints, skin, heart, kidneys, lungs and the nervous system. Psoriatic is another inflammatory form of arthritis that affects people suffering from the chronic skin condition psoriasis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is also classified as an autoimmune disease (immune cells attack the body’s own healthy tissues). The joints are primarily affected by rheumatoid arthritis, but there can be systemic effects (i.e. Researchers have worked for years to find the cause of the abnormal autoimmune response associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has long been associated with work disability . Older studies have concluded that as many as 50% of people with RA for 10 years or more have been forced to stop working.

Osteoarthritis is the most recognizable form of arthritis touching 16-20 million inhabitants of the United States alone. Osteoarthritis (OA) originates with the decomposition of cartilage in joints, resulting in joint pain.

Treatment for joint pain include resting to allow the injury to heal. Warm baths and ice also reduce the swelling and provide some relief. Treatment only relieves the pain temporarily. Conventional painkillers have side effects. Treatment of Arthritis in the thumb depends on the symptoms and the stage of the disease. Some arthritic thumbs may be relieved with an aspirin.

Healthy diet is important, so try to eat a balanced diet, take lots of vegetables, fruits, fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamins C, E and folic acid. Avoid cigarettes, alcohol, coffee and tea.

Joint pain is a chronic medical condition that can affect anyone. The pain is usually accompanied by a feeling of stiffness in the affected joint in conjunction with redness and fever. Joint Power Rx could be an excellent solution because this formula includes many added herbal extracts and nutrients that are key in joint health.

Exercise used as one of the rheumatoid arthritis natural remedies include performing aerobic exercises which include walking, dancing, or swimming. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet and normal body weight. Also, you should get regular checkups.

Studies have shown that exercise helps people with arthritis in many ways. Exercise reduces joint pain and stiffness and increases flexibility, muscle strength, cardiac fitness, and endurance.

Alternative and natural treatments have gained popularity and serve as a complement to traditional therapies. Some treatments get little respect regarding their efficacy, compounded by warnings for potential drug interactions and side effects. Alternate hot and cold applications will give relief to swollen and painful joints.

Glucosamine is a substance that appears in the human system naturally. There are supplements of this natural cure for arthritis on the market, and some people have found relief by using this remedy. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are natural substances that are part of the building blocks found in and around cartilage. Extracts from animal products have been used in Europe for more than a decade to reduce pain and improve mobility in patients with osteoarthritis.

Fruit and vegetables, with their antioxidant activity, usually exert an anti-inflammatory effect. Other natural arthritis remedies include the herb white willow, for pain management.
