Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment Options

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Robert Kokoska Said:

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition where involves inflammation of joints which leads to further swelling and pain. It causes an upset inside the body where the immune system starts attacking joint tissue, cartilage and other organs. However the causes of rheumatoid arthritis are still not known fully. This type of arthritis is the most common and affects one in every 100 people. Rheumatoid arthritis affects people of all ages but mainly effects people within the ages of 30 to 50. Women are three times more likely to be effected as men. Patients carrying this form of arthritis most often complain of fluctuating pain and inflammation of joints, which can get gets worse during flare-ups. This article aims to offer an insight into several treatments that can be used against rheumatoid arthritis.

There are two main kinds of drugs used against rheumatoid arthritis; first line drugs, fast acting drugs, and second line which are slow acting drugs.

First line drugs include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Examples of NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen and etodolac. These can be used to reduce pain and swelling of joints. Aspirin has long been used to decrease inflammation. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis by using doses that are higher then those used during fever. Newer types of NSAIDs are effective as aspirin and require fewer intakes per day. However just like all medication, it has its own side effects which include stomach pain, abdominal pain and a few others. In order to minimize the side effects of NSAIDs, they are regularly taken with meals. Another type of first line drugs includes Corticosteroids.

They are more powerful then NSAIDs and are given either orally or through an injection to the inflamed areas such as joints. Corticosteroids are given in small doses, mainly during flare-ups as it reacts more strongly to inflammation. However it can have serious side effects on the body if given for an extended period of time in high doses. These include weight gain, easy risk of infection, easy bruising and others. The side effects can be minimized by decreasing the level of doses given to the patients slowly as the condition of the patient improves. A sharp decline in the doses given to the patient is discouraged as it can lead to flare-ups and other symptoms of the disease.

Second line drugs include Disease-modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs or DMARDs. These drugs are mainly used to prevent destruction of joints and deformity. DMARDs are used for an extended period of time in order to be effective. DMARDs can often be used with a combination of other second line drugs as therapy. Some examples of DMARDs include Sulfasalazine, Hydroxychloroquine, D-penicillamine and others.

Apart from the above methods, there are some other approaches that can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The patients can undertake exercise that can help them improve their physical condition and improve joint mobility. Additionally it is important to have a healthy intake of food. Many often patients with rheumatoid arthritis can experience weight loss. This can be combined with medication and therapy to come up with a more potent combination against the condition. Depending on your position, you can under go either physiotherapy or occupational therapy. This will help improve flexibility, mobility, and reduce pain in your joints.

The aforementioned approaches to rheumatoid arthritis have been used time and again. However it is essential to seek your nearest doctor to get firm guidance. Each arthritis case shall be dealt on an individual basis. With the passage of time, new and more effective treatments against arthritis are starting to come through. However the only way to gain the maximum benefit from the existing treatments will be to remain punctual throughout the course of the medication. It is important to constantly consult your doctor and keep him or her up to date with your condition, so that the doctor can advise you further and give more effective feedback.

Tips on How to Relieve your Arthritis Pain

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
Sue Jan Said:

There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Without a thorough examination the doctor will not be able to find which type of arthritis you are suffering from. Arthritis can stem from injuries and strains caused by sports, repetitive motion, overexertion etc. Arthritic diseases include rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, which are autoimmune diseases; septic arthritis, caused by joint infection; and the more common osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease that largely affects older people.

There are three stages of arthritis:

The first stage of arthritis is swelling. The second stage is rapid division and growth of the cells. In the third stage the cells release specific enzymes, which erode the bone, causing the joint to lose its shape. It is then the arthritis pain becomes unbearable. Since this is a systemic disease, it can migrate and affect other body organs. So it is better to detect arthritis at its early stage before it spreads to other parts of the body. Arthritis can be treated with proper therapy and medication.

Treatment: Arthritis treatment includes medicine, exercise, thermal modalities, joint protection and surgery.

Medicine: there are several effective arthritis medications available in the market for proper arthritis treatment. Anti-inflammatory drugs are helpful in most cases. However you should consult a doctor before buying any medicine.

Exercise: this helps strengthen muscles and joints plus increases blood circulation in those areas. Yoga is very therapeutic in reducing arthritis pain.

Rest: rest provides good arthritis relief, as proper rest helps the body to conserve energy and allows the body to heal and reduce pain.

Thermal modalities: cold and heat compresses give short-term relief to stiffness and pain.

Joint protection: this allows the patient to move with minimal stress to the joints. Joint protections like knee supports, back belts are common arthritis relief products widely available on the market today.

Dealing With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
Bercle George Said:

Rheumatoid arthritis is an illness where white blood cells suddenly attack and cripple healthy tissues, specifically joints and cartilage. There are just few ways to help ease the pain and to recognize the symptoms, depending on which stage of the disease you are in. If you are in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis there is a new disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) which has done a vital job in controlling symptoms. It is effective in the initial stages, so if you think you may have rheumatoid arthritis, one thing that you must not take for granted- visit your doctor as early as possible.

There are other alternatives if you are in later stages of rheumatoid arthritis. These are also beneficial if you are still in early stages. One is to apply anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. These drugs can do a great job to lessen pain and inflammation. But, these have side effects, mentioning heart problems and gastrointestinal bleeding. You can also apply acetaminophen for your rheumatoid arthritis, which does not have these side effects.

When symptoms are just mild, moderate exercise including stretching, weight lifting, and aerobics lessen rheumatoid arthritis pain. See to it to rest when your joints flare up as this would just add strain to your aching joints. Stretching is vital because it develops flexibility and is simple enough to do at any age.

Weight lifting also can improve flexibility as well as strength and balance. Barbells are just easy to lift, convenient, and inexpensive. Do not forget to stretch before lifting any weights. If you would like you can begin with no weights at all (such as going leg lifts for rheumatoid arthritis in the knees), then add weights when you are capable.

Some other well-known forms of exercise for rheumatoid arthritis are aqua (water) therapy and Tai Chi. See to it that you find an actual therapist as they have specific exercises they do for arthritis patients. Aerobics instructors may push to far and do further damage. Tai Chi has no long term studies proving its effectiveness, but due to testimonials from patients who have taken Tai Chi, the Arthritis Foundation began providing the class.

Some other ways to ease the pain of rheumatoid arthritis are to lose weight to take additional pressure off joints, eating a healthy diet, getting enough rest and sleep, utilizing heat or ice, and possibly using devices such as a cane, brace, or splint. There are lots of resources for additional information on rheumatoid arthritis and these include online resources.

Handy Dandy Arthritis Treatments For Dogs

Friday, November 6th, 2009
Jeff Foster Said:

So your dog has arthritis?

Well, even though it is hard to hear, you must realize that you are not alone. Arthritis in dogs is one of the most common sources of chronic pain the veterinarians treat in their clinics today. Research seems to indicate that one in every five adult dogs is hammered with arthritis and the pain that goes along with it.

If your pet is suffering from arthritis you may see some signs that your pup is favoring one leg more than the other, she may sleep more, or seem to have more trouble standing for sitting. If your dog has arthritis you might also notice that she is more hesitant to climb stairs, run or jump. It may even seem that her joints seem sore or that she has no interest in playing. In some cases, dogs with arthritis also begin to show signs of weight gain.

If you are concerned that your dog may be suffering from arthritis, then it is quite important that you take your pet in to see the vet for an accurate screening and diagnosis. With an appropriate diagnosis, the treatment for dog arthritis is quite similar to arthritis treatment for humans.

For dogs suffering with arthritis, regular exercise is important to help maintain a proper body weight. NSAIDS or non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are the most common form of pharmaceutical arthritis treatments for your dog. Over-the counter dog arthritis treatments such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, omega fatty acids and Boswellin may also be prescribed by your veterinarian.

Glucosamine absorbs and releases water with each step, acting as a shock absorber for the joints. It also stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans, important proteins found in cartilage, which helps to slow the deterioration of joints and ease your dog’s arthritis pain.

Chondroitin attracts fluids into proteoglycan molecules which draws nutrients into the cartilage and increases the flow of fluid into the cartilage which adds resiliency. Chondroitin also helps protect existing cartilage from premature degeneration and provides structure and flexibility to the joints. Giving more life to your doggy’s joints.

Other options for medications for arthritis include Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which are constituents of fish oils. These fatty acids act as anti-inflammatory agents helping to further reduce the pain from inflammation.

Boswellin may also be recommended by your vet for its ability to improve the blood supply to the joints and maintain the integrity of blood vessels. It is also known for helping to improve mobility in stiff joints by reducing swelling. Less swelling, less pain for your best friend.

While there are varying arthritis treatments for dogs you will need to talk with your vet to determine the best course of action for you’re your pet. Some therapies may take a few weeks to completely work, so don’t get discouraged. Seek the best treatment for your pet, after all isn’t that what they deserve!

Arthritis treatment for your dog is too important to ignore and if your dog is suffering, then she deserves your full attention and the most comprehensive treatment plan that your vet can design.

No dog should suffer needlessly, so if arthritis is slowing your pet down make the call to your vet today to screen your dog for arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Relief and Cure

Bernice Eker Said:

Living with the pain is the most difficult thing to accept among patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but this is not necessarily true for those people who seek ways for pain relief.

There are traditional and natural treatments as rheumatoid arthritis pain relief. Short-term relievers are drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone-type of medications. The use of drugs in the long-term medication has shown negative results among patients as certain complications developed over time.

Examples of these complications are the development of osteoporosis and gastrointestinal problems in the long-term use of aspirin. Side effects such as headaches, vomiting, nausea and gas problems are also among its known negative effects. Cortisone, usually given through injections are harmful in the long run because it promotes dependency as one of its side-effects.

Taking control of the situation is the first step towards rheumatoid arthritis pain relief. It should start with knowing what type of arthritis it is, its causes, symptoms and how to treat it. Get to know the medical terms that are used to refer to the condition and the other terminologies associated with it.

There have been books which are available in the market written by those who have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and who found ways on how to eliminate the pain. A detailed outline about the condition and its causes are well explained in the books. These people have found the effective treatments by studying and experimenting on the different methods that help cure arthritis.

Alternative pain relief treatments are hot and cold treatments, positive thinking, relaxation techniques, massage, electrical stimulation, topical lotions and lastly, a good sense of humor.

Relief From the Relentless Pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
Trevor Price Said:

If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, pain relief is likely your primary interest. This degenerative disease can be extremely painful and uncomfortable when it flares up. Basically, rheumatoid arthritis typically affects the joints around the ankles, wrists, fingers and hands.

The tissue that surrounds the joint, called synovial fluid, allows for smooth movement between the bones. Rheumatoid arthritis develops when this fluid becomes damaged, causing inflammation, pain and swelling of the joints. This inflammation can eventually destroy the joint, eating away at the cartilage and bone.

No one knows what triggers the inflammation, but it’s thought to be an autoimmune disease in which the immune system creates antibodies that fight against the body’s tissues. It is unclear why this occurs, but it’s a common illness that affects millions of people and tends to run in families. It can develop at any age, but usually starts in the latter part of middle age.

The Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The most common symptom of rheumatoid arthritis is acute pain and swelling in the joints along with a hot sensation and almost burning pain. Also associated with the disease are flu-like symptoms which include general aches, pains and fever. The initial onset of the disease is marked by morning stiffness of the affected joints.

Following are typical methods to treat this painful disease.

Contemporary Pain Medicine

The medication used to treat rheumatoid arthritis are pain relievers like acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs have the added benefit of reducing inflammation as well as pain. Corticosteroids are given orally to treat severe or aggressive forms of the disease.

Physical Therapy as Treatment

Hydrotherapy is effective for soothing pain and is one of the oldest treatments for arthritis pain relief. It’s often used in conjunction with other treatments. Thermotherapy is the application of heat or cold to sore joints, which can also ease pain.

Most physiotherapists recommend regular exercise and joint and muscle strengthening activities. Generally, an easy exercise routine that includes both strengthening and aerobic activity is recommended.

Managing the Disease Through Diet

If you’re overweight and suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, weight loss is important. Follow an anti-inflammatory program that excludes dairy and processed foods, avoids excess gluten and sugar, and includes the herbs ginger, curcumin and tumeric.

In addition to relieving pressure on the joints, the diet associated with weight loss can also improve your overall health. Finally, fish oil and flaxseed oil are critical anti-inflammatories that can be very helpful.

Bryonia Pain Relief

Bryonia is a homeopathic treatment designed to reduce the heat and swelling of joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis. It’s a natural arthritis pain relief treatment that’s also believed to regulate toxicity levels in the joints and therefore reduce instances of inflammation.

Homeopaths believe that applying pressure to the joints can provide both temporary and ongoing pain relief.

For those who suffer from this painful disease – which can cloud the vibrancy of each day with discomforting gloom – relief is often foremost on their minds. There are at least a few viable options to provide temporary distance from the pain.

Natural Arthritis Pain Relief Treatment

dr rony Said:

In addition to a healthy diet, adding these 5 ingredients to your diet can help inflammation and swelling caused by injuries, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, gouty arthritis(gout), and back pain. Use these ingredients for any symptoms that you would take non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (N.S.A.I.D. i.e: Ibuprofen, Motrin, Celebrex) for to reduce the pain.

The following five ingredients have been clinically found to reduce or replace the need for N.S.A.I.D.:

Glucosamine Hydrochloride: The introduction of this form of Glucosamine is documented to be the most effective if you are interested in having the most efficient absorption possible. Glucosamine is manufactured by our bodies – but as we grow older, as with other compounds, we need some help.

The compound helps with your body’s natural mechanism of joint lubrication. Glucosamine Hydrochloride vs. Sulfate is recommended because studies show that the Glucosamine sulfate is stabilized with sodium chloride (salt). Many People have dietary restrictions limiting salt intake.

Manganese: Manganese is a co-factor,(a helper) required for Glucosamine to be converted to its active form and ultimately, adequately absorbed. It is important to make sure the Glucosamine supplement contains manganese.

Gotu Cola(Pennywort): Gotu Kola, also known as Pennywort, is a well known natural remedy to assist pain relief and proper circulation of blood.

Ginger: Ginger has been used for centuries for pain relief in musculoskeletal conditions. It is an excellent antioxidant and is known for its analgesic activity.

Celery: Celery increases elimination of urates from the kidneys, assisting your body to fight Gout – an arthritic disease caused by an accumulation of urate crystals at the joints. Celery also reduces inflammation around the joint.

We have found that you can readily find these products at supplement stores but only one offers all of them in one dosage taken twice a day. “Ruflex” is the only one that has all the above ingredients in one pill. “Ruflex”, an Australian product from Sunsnatural L.L.C. is available on line, (see below). Australian supplements are desirable, because Australia requires that all supplements be approved by their Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and proven to work as promised, clinically proven with double blind studies.

As always; before taking any supplements your Doctor should be consulted. If you are on blood thinners or scheduled for surgery you should consult your physician before taking any of these supplements. Certain elements included in these vastly improve circulation.

8 Great Steps To Beat Arthritis

Friday, October 30th, 2009
Harinder Johal Said:

It is a disease which affects the joints and surrounding tissues .Arthritis is the number one cause of chronic disability. It refers to an inflammatory change of the joint. Many different arthritis disorders are known such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. They differ in terms of different involved joints, the number of affected joints, the age at onset, or additional involved organs. Here are some Steps to over come this

Step1 Take a vitamin C supplement to help beat arthritis. There is a strong link between the risk of developing some types of arthritis and low vitamin C intake. Some physicians suggest taking a vitamin C supplement.

Step2 Add other supplements such as glucosamine, chodroitin and certain vitamins to help beat arthritis. Ask your physician before taking any supplements or over-the-counter medications.

Step3 Avoid smoking and blood transfusions! Both are two known, significant risk factors in developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Step4 Eat your fruits and veggies. Research has shown that an increase in fruit and vegetables in the diet can help beat osteoarthritis.

Step5 Adopt a natural, low-fat diet based on whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Research has found that people who have this diet rarely develop arthritis. All fats aggravate arthritis. Also avoid all vegetable and fish oils, including olive, canola and primrose oils.

Step6 Go vegetarian and natural. Studies show that animal products, especially milk, aggravate arthritis symptoms. Eating fresh, whole foods that supply phytochemicals and antioxidants that fight disease and keep joints healthy helps beat arthritis too.

Step7 Shun non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Motrin and Naprosyn, often used to fight the pain of arthritis. They actually aggravate the causes of arthritis and should not be used. Substitute with aspirin and nabumetone instead.

Step8 Include low-impact, aerobic exercise. It’s a well-known way to beat arthritis while providing other health benefits as well.
